Chitrabanu was born and brought up in a small village near Erode, Tamilnadu. She grew up in a simple agricultural family that valued the importance of education and contributing to society in any possible way. She completed her schooling in Erode at Kalaimagal Kalvi Nilayam and then moved to Coimbatore for her college education. After obtaining a master’s degree in food science and nutrition, she moved to the US and pursued another master’s degree in computer science. This transition made her realise her passion for acquiring new skills and her preference for taking on new challenges. Before returning to India with her family, she worked at several renowned IT companies. Being brought up in a village where fresh air and cleanliness were never an issue, she observed how difficult it was in cities with huge crowds to segregate and dispose of the household wastes. She took the responsibility in the community where she lived and worked with individual houses to get the waste segregated at source and initiated composting of the biodegradable wastes. This showed her ability to lead and work with people in harmony to make an impact in society. This experience paved the way for her to teach spoken English to children in the government schools near her native village when her family decided to move back there.
